Music Audition Hints

To maximise your chances of success at music auditions for Contemporary Music Centre the following hints are offered:

  • Perform at least one cover version
  • Do NOT sing acapella – have a backing disk OR an accompanist
  • Have no more than 1 accompanist
  • If playing an instrument make sure that it is a quality instrument that has been reliably set-up.
  • Learn your songs/pieces thoroughly – NO lyric prompt sheets – NO Chord Charts. The only exception might be very complex pieces.
  • No solo’s without accompaniment – they mean zero out of context
  • If you say that you are a Performer then demonstrate this through your performance / stage craft
  • Contrasting Pieces – by our definition, contrasting means different to each other – thus songs from the same genre eg metal are not contrasting – if you are only prepared to play in one style you are unsuitable for our type of training
  • If you play more than one instrument, semi-competently at least, demonstrate this in your audition – plan ahead – prepare thoroughly
  • Drummers should consider bringing along some audio material to play against
